KINDRED ROOTS

KNITTED PATTERN DESIGN FOR ROOTED TEXTILES 2026

A commissioned knitted pattern design for Rooted Textiles - a one day sustainable textile event run by Perthshire Wool, in the annual Sustainable Fashion Week. The commissioned design was inspired by the theme of “rooted”, using wool from the event. Drawing inspiration from local plants and really connecting to our roots.

“Kindred Roots explore the strength and connection found within community.

Kindred refers to people who share a connection, bond, or sense of belonging. It can suggest community, friendship, shared values and the feeling of being connected to others, while roots symbolise being grounded, secure and connected to where we come from.

Together, Kindred Roots can be interpretated as the connections that anchor us to one another.

Intertwining ‘roots’, represented through the rib & cable structure, reflect a sense of belonging, stability and security. This is further informed by the interconnected nature of plant root systems. Fungal networks can connect plants underground, allowing nutrients and signalling compounds to move between them – a natural network of support and exchange.

The Fair Isle motifs are inspired by seed dispersal, drawing from sycamore seeds, dandelion seeds and conkers. Their movement through the landscape reflects how ideas, knowledge, care and support can also be carried and shared within a community.

We are grounded by our connections, while what we share with one another helps us grow.”
